HaBimak – Cooperative Beit Midrash

“Israel is not redeemed except out of ten people who sit with each other and each of them calls and disagrees with his friend and their voice is heard” (Tana Debi Eliyahu)

The Beit Midrash is a cooperative beit midrash that operates at the university and is intended for students who want to deepen their study of various topics in Judaism. The beit midrash is cooperative, which means that the participants take an active part in its operation and in the transmission of its content. As part of it, there are weekly study evenings conducted by one of the participants, a rabbi or a lecturer, and also activities around holidays, joint Sabbaths and more.

Droma

About Us: Beit Midrash ‘Droma’ is an extra-academic study space at Ben-Gurion University which is a Beit Midrash and a place of study for religious and secular students interested in experiential, existential and meaningful study of Jewish texts. In the Beit Midrash, we study the fundamental texts of Judaism in an orderly manner: the Bible, the Talmud, the thought of Israel, Hasidism and Kabbalah and try to create a deep familiarity and intimacy between the student and the texts. We are also exposed to a wide variety of other texts: literary, theoretical and philosophical as part of the search for spiritual depth and the open intellectual dialogue that we are trying to produce.
In Droma, secular teachers as well as rabbis and yeshiva leaders teach side by side as partners in this special discourse community of the renewed Jewish learning world who look to touch more deeply on big and small questions, and those who want to expand the social-intellectual circle and take part in a different level of discussion. Beit Midrash Droma operates in collaboration with the Yaakov Herzog Center for Jewish Studies.

Paamonim Organization

“Paamonim” is a non-profit social organization that operates and accompanies approximately 4,000 families nation-wide.The Paamonim organization helps families with financial problems, through training and professional guidance in the financial and behavioral fields, allowing families to balance their budgets, exhaust their earning capacity and get on the road. At the same time, the organization makes sure to help reduce and settle debts and solve complicated financial problems.
“Paamonim” at Ben-Gurion University currently has around 70 volunteers helping 40 families. As the first student branch established in the organization, the branch has set itself the goal of leading the universities in Israel with initiative, the quality of assistance to families, professionalism and adapting the nature of the process to the students’ needs and their ideals.
Volunteering opportunities: the organization’s activity are on a voluntary basis only and it includes escorting families in financial distress, escorting a family together with an additional escort throughout the student year. Personal meetings with the family while teaching them tools according to the ongoing training and induction of the team leader.
How can I volunteer? Students who wish to volunteer are screened during the first weeks of the year, in order to coordinate expectations regarding the required commitment and check their suitability for the process. No prior knowledge is required! Those who were accepted to accompany a family, go through 8 sessions of training (3-4 hours each time) during their studies. At the end of the training, the volunteers are paired up and receive a family. Volunteers receive regular training from a team leader and undergo several professional training courses. A pair of counselors conduct personal meetings with the family according to the steps taught in the training. Prior preparation of the team is required for each meeting with the family, and there are summary tasks at the end of each meeting. The average scope of volunteering throughout the year is about 3-4 hours per week on average.

Bishvil HaNefesh (For The Soul)

About: Bishvil HaNefesh is a student club established in 2019 with the aim of raising awareness about mental health, normalization, and expanding the discourse around mental health through social activism on campus. This is due to the growing importance of dealing with mental health, and in light of the need we have identified to provide necessary service to students on the issue.
How did it start? The club’s activities were started by a group of students who experienced firsthand the difficult loss of their close friend, the late Alon Davidian, who ended his life. Alon’s death was unexpected, because he was seen by the group as an optimistic, strong person and as a model. Therefore, the event enhanced the necessity to increase engagement with the issue of mental health, and the fact that it touches the lives of each and every one of us.
The club’s goals: raising awareness about mental health issues, the mental difficulties experienced by many students during their degree and breaking the stigma surrounding it. Creating a safe and pleasant environment in the academic space, which will allow an open discourse on issues related to mental health and the normalization of the discourse around them. Accessing information regarding the ways of receiving psychological help, both on behalf of professional bodies at the university and on behalf of various institutions outside it.
How? We created a dedicated community of volunteers hold regular meetings with club members and strive to provide responsibility and leadership to those interested in it. We expanded a virtual community through social networks, established a wide circle of support and assistance for students experiencing mental difficulties, hold physical and virtually events (lectures, discussion circles, etc.), with the aim of consistently raising the topic of mental health.

Achraynikim

About us: We are a group of young people who were educated in the spirit of “After me!” and strive to shape a different reality for our lives here in the city as young people. A reality in which Beer Sheva is not a transit city, but a city full of opportunities.
What is the spirit “after me!”?
– Every child in Israel should have the most tools to design a future for their selves as they wish.
– Every person in Israel should be responsible for their future and the future of their community.
– Israel’s society should be democratic, just, solidary and peace-loving.
So what does that mean? Most of us were educated as teenagers on values of reciprocity, loving others, taking responsibility, and not giving up. In the course of everyday life, these values are pushed under piles of chores, jobs, bills, and worries. Despite the great desire to contribute to the community and take responsibility, it is difficult to do it alone. We choose to join forces, volunteer together, initiate together, and have fun together.
Want to take part? Even if you are not a student, you are welcome to contact, cooperate, come to a meeting or just come and volunteer with us. Ways to join and contact: Eric Berman: 054-6855637, email: [email protected], Facebook Page

BeShe’ela

Who we are? BeShe’ela is the student club for the formally religious and non-religous at Ben Gurion University. The club’s aims is to create a warm and cohesive group for non-religous in which they can speak in the special language common to formally religious people. Our club is a place to share, consult, connect, joke and enjoy. In addition, the formally religious people are a unique group which migrate from culture to culture and therefore has a special point of view on a variety of issues. We strive to make our special voice heard externally as well and to make our own contribution to the student community. Finally, exiting religion is often carried out independently and involves unique challenges, therefore the club aims to provide support and help with this process in a variety of issues: social, economic, and academic. If you are exiting your religion, we invite you to join!
